TADOC is located in Ankara. Ankara is the capital of Turkey. The city was formerly called "Ankyra" which meant anchor and later it was changed to "Angora". As the capital city, Ankara can be regarded as the city of bureaucrats with the President's residence, the parliament building, government offices and foreign embassies. Ankara is a huge university town and you'll find the streets of Kizilay and the bars of Sakarya thronged with students for most of the year. A lot of foreigners are here on business but tourism is beginning to have an impact on various aspects of the city. Ankara is a reasonably convenient place to base yourself if you want to travel Anatolia, Cappadocia or the Black Sea coast and a growing number of tour operators and related service industries are catering to tourists. Ankara's huge ASTI (AHSH-tee) bus terminal is the hub of the country's road transport network, with bus service to all points at all hours of the day and much of the night. Esenboga Airport is 33 km ( 21 miles , about 50 minutes in normal traffic) northeast of the city center, reached by inexpensive Havas airport bus from the ASTI bus terminal or Ankara Gar train station, or by expensive taxi. Turkish Airlines, Onur Air, AtlasJet and FlyAir have very frequent flights to Istanbul, and service to most other important cities more than about 300 km ( 186 miles ) away. Ankara's Gar (train station) has good service to and from Istanbul (and Eskisehir), and useful services to Izmir, and several cities farther away. Ankara has several light-rail underground trains including the Metro and Ankaray systems which help you get from place to place quickly and cheaply. You can take Ankaray to or from ASTI (bus terminal), pictured in the lower left corner of the little map below this page. To go between ASTI and the Gar (train station), take Ankaray to Kurtulus, then change to the older train line, which stops right in the Gar. |
